Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, melting glaciers, droughts and devastating floods are disturbing the natural balance of our planet. Among the worst-affected countries is Somalia, where repeated floods and droughts have forced thousands of families to leave their homes.

Flood-induced displacement in Somalia highlights the urgent need for collective action. Young people, who represent the future of humanity, can play a vital role in combating climate change and protecting vulnerable communities.

The youth can begin by spreading environmental awareness among people. They can organise campaigns in schools and colleges to encourage tree plantation, water conservation, waste management and the reduction of plastic use. They can also promote renewable sources of energy, such as solar and wind power, and encourage people to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles.

Modern technology provides another opportunity for young people to make a difference. They can use social media to spread awareness, share weather alerts and educate communities about disaster preparedness. Young volunteers can help provide food, clean drinking water, medicines and temporary shelter to families displaced by floods. They can also support children whose education has been interrupted by natural disasters.

The situation in Somalia demonstrates the importance of youth participation. In 2023, severe floods affected more than 2.48 million people and displaced over 1.2 million. Young Somali volunteers and organisations have been helping communities prepare for disasters, spread early warnings and rebuild their lives. Such efforts show that young people are not merely victims of climate change; they can also become agents of positive change.

However, individual efforts alone cannot solve this global problem. Governments must strengthen disaster-management systems, improve drainage and flood-control infrastructure, protect forests and wetlands, and invest in climate-resilient agriculture. Educational institutions should include environmental education in their curricula and encourage students to participate in practical conservation activities. International cooperation is also essential to support vulnerable countries like Somalia.

In conclusion, climate change is a shared responsibility, and the youth have the energy, creativity and determination to lead the fight against it. Every small step towards environmental protection can contribute to a safer future. The suffering of displaced families in Somalia reminds us that protecting the environment means protecting human lives, dignity and livelihoods.
